Fanagoria Estate Winery is located on the Taman peninsula between the Black Sea and Azov Sea in the Temruk District of Krasnodar region. It was founded through the merger of Sennoi Winery and Fanagoriysky Viticultural State Farm, and became a private joint stock company in 1996. Fanagoria is the largest winery in the area with output of more than 20 million liters of wine.
Fanagoria imported and planted a large area of French grape vines in 1997, and these are used for its Cru Lermont premium wines. The winery now has over 2300 hectares of vineyards, which include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Saperavi, Traminer; Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Aligote. Australian flying-winemaker John Worontshak began work at Fanagoria about two years ago and new French crushing equipment has been installed.
Fanagoria makes a number of different wines, however its NR (Numerical Reserve) and Cru Lermont are their premium dry wine lines. Fanagoria makes and interesting specialty herbal wines called Cherny Leker (Black Healer), which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi and Ranniy Magarach together with an assortment of herbs. Fanagoria recently began production of ice wine from Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Saperavi grapes. It also has a line of sparkling wines and brandies. Fanagoria exports wines to Japan, Israel and the United States.
